Gaojing is a town in Baoshan District, on the northern side of Shanghai. It lies on the flat land of the Yangtze River Delta, and from above it looks like much of outer Shanghai. Large residential compounds and business parks sit between wide main roads and elevated expressways. Older creeks and channels still thread through the pattern.
Like many places on the edge of the city, Gaojing changed rapidly as Shanghai grew outward, and most of its farmland gave way to housing and commercial areas. Its closeness to the central districts means it now belongs to the daily life of the city and no longer feels like a separate place.
