It sits close to where Niger, Benin and Nigeria meet, and it has long been a trading and crossing point. A bridge carries the main road over the river to Malanville in Benin, which makes Gaya an important stop on the route to the coast.
The map is shaped by the river. The Niger bends broadly past the town, with sandbanks and a green floodplain along its banks. The town's streets spread out from the road leading to the bridge, forming a loose grid of compounds and markets set back from the water.
