Gecheng is the seat of Chengkou County, in the northeastern corner of Chongqing Municipality, where the Daba Mountains rise along the borders with Sichuan and Shaanxi. The town occupies one of the few stretches of flat land available, and its shape from above is dictated almost entirely by the terrain around it.
The streets follow a river through the valley, so the town stretches in a long band rather than spreading outwards. Buildings press up to the water on both sides, bridges connect the two banks, and the slopes climb steeply just beyond the last row of blocks. Roads out of town have to thread along the valleys to reach anywhere else.
A Gecheng map poster shows a place defined by its limits. In black and white the river becomes the central line of the composition, the town clings to it, and the blank space around it stands in for the mountains. It is a clear example of how geography draws a town's outline before anyone plans it.

With built-up land on both sides of the river, bridges stitch the two halves together, appearing as short crossings at regular points along the valley.
Mountain edges
The town ends where the slopes begin, so its outline is long and narrow. The emptiness around it on the poster reflects the steep terrain of the Daba Mountains.
