Geilo lies in Hallingdal in Buskerud, at the edge of the high country that leads up to the Hardangervidda plateau. The village is small and easy to read on a map. The houses gather close to the railway station, a lake stretches beside them, and the ski slopes climb the hills above. From above you can see how little flat land there is between the water and the mountain.
The Bergen Line has run through Geilo for more than a century, and the railway explains the village's shape. Streets grow outward from the station in a loose network, with cabins and hotels spreading onto the hillsides. Geilo is one of Norway's longest-established winter resorts. It is known for cross-country trails as much as for its lifts, and in good snow years the trails run out across the open ground.
