Gentilly borders the southern edge of Paris, just beyond the 13th and 14th arrondissements, in the Val-de-Marne department. On a map, the Boulevard Périphérique and its ramps form a sharp edge along the north side of the town. Beyond it lie the Paris street grid and the green space of the Cité Internationale Universitaire. South of the boundary, Gentilly's own streets climb the slopes of a small valley.
That valley was carved by the Bièvre, a river that once ran through Gentilly into Paris and has since been covered over. Its route still shapes the terrain and some street alignments. The town's layout mixes older lanes with larger blocks of twentieth-century housing, rail lines and service areas. It has the typical density and variety of the first ring of suburbs around the capital.
