Gode stands on the Shebelle River in the Somali Region of south-eastern Ethiopia, in a hot, semi-arid lowland. The river is the town's lifeline and the dominant feature of the map. It winds through the landscape in wide loops, and the streets of Gode spread out over the flat ground beside it.
The town's layout is loose and open, with broad roads, market areas and residential quarters on a largely regular pattern. Past the edge of town the land opens into dry plains crossed by tracks. Patches of cultivated fields along the river show where irrigation draws on the Shebelle's water. There is also an airport close to the town.
