Gombe sits in the savanna of northeastern Nigeria, and on a map it reads as a crossroads town. Major roads come in from several directions and meet in the older centre, where the lanes are tighter and less regular. Around that core, newer neighbourhoods follow a looser, more planned pattern, with broad plots, government compounds and long roads that fade into farmland and scrub at the edges.
The city became a state capital in 1996, when Gombe State was carved out of Bauchi State, and much of its modern footprint dates from the decades since. Ministries, schools and markets were added to what had been a smaller emirate town, and the drawing shows that layering: an older, denser heart surrounded by wider streets laid out for an administrative role.
