Goryachiy Klyuch lies in Krasnodar Krai, south of Krasnodar, where the plains of the Kuban give way to the forested foothills of the western Caucasus. Its name means hot spring, and the town grew as a resort around the thermal and mineral springs here. From above, it follows the Psekups river valley, with streets stretched along the water.
The valley shape defines the map. The river winds through the centre, with the resort area, parks and older streets close to its banks, while newer neighbourhoods spread across the flatter ground. Wooded hills rise close on both sides, so the town is long and narrow rather than round.
The area around the town is known for rock formations, gorges and forest trails, and the main road south to the Black Sea coast runs through the hills here.
