Gotland is Sweden's largest island, lying in the middle of the Baltic Sea east of the mainland. It is long, low and made of limestone, stretching from the smaller island of Fårö in the north to a slender southern point. The land is mostly flat, with farmland, pine forest and wetlands crossed by a network of straight country roads that link many small parishes.
Visby, the main town, sits on the west coast behind a medieval ring wall more than three kilometres long, one of the most complete in northern Europe and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside it, church ruins and narrow lanes form a dense core. On a Gotland map poster Visby is the one place where streets truly gather.
The island has more than ninety medieval churches, most still in use and standing at the centre of their rural parishes. Along the coast, and especially on Fårö, weathered limestone sea stacks called raukar rise from the shore. Each summer Visby also hosts Almedalen Week, a large political gathering that brings Swedish party leaders to the town.
