The surrounding land is part of the Sahel: open, largely flat and dry for much of the year, with fields and scattered trees rather than dense cover. Gourcy lies on routes connecting the capital region with the north, including the road toward Ouahigouya, and those roads shape its layout as they meet in the centre.
