Great Yarmouth is on the Norfolk coast, on a narrow strip of land between the North Sea and the River Yare. The river runs parallel to the coast for some distance before reaching the sea. On the map, the town is a long, thin shape, with the beach and seafront on the east, the river quays on the west, and Breydon Water opening out to the northwest.
The town was one of England's great herring ports. It still keeps long stretches of its medieval town wall and traces of the Rows, the narrow lanes that once ran between the quay and the market. Along the seafront, Britannia Pier and Wellington Pier reach out into the sea. The Nelson's Monument column stands on the South Denes toward the river mouth.

To the northwest, the rivers widen into a broad tidal estuary. This large, smooth expanse of water gives the map a wide, open edge.
