Guadalupe Island is a remote volcanic island belonging to Mexico, about 240 kilometres off the west coast of Baja California in the Pacific. It runs roughly north to south in a long, slender shape. Its spine is a high ridge of old volcanic peaks that drops steeply to the sea on nearly every side, leaving little flat ground and only a handful of landing places.
On a map the island is mostly outline and relief. The coast is sheer and only lightly indented, and a few tracks link small camps used by fishers, researchers and the navy. The rest is open slope. The island is a protected biosphere reserve and is best known for its marine life. The clear waters around it are among the most studied places for great white sharks, and cage divers come each autumn. Its beaches are breeding grounds for the Guadalupe fur seal, a species once thought extinct. Feral goats that stripped much of the vegetation have since been removed.
