Gudalur lies in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu, close to the borders with Kerala and Karnataka. The town sits on the western side of the Nilgiri hills, and on the map it appears as a junction where several highland roads meet, surrounded by slopes, valleys and green land.
The streets follow the terrain, winding along ridges and valleys rather than forming a grid. The area around town is covered with tea estates, plantations and forest, and the roads toward Ooty, Kerala and Mysore curve through the hills, some with tight bends as they descend.
