Gundupālaiyam lies within the wider urban area of Puducherry, the former French territory on India's south-eastern coast. On the map it sits inland from the old town, where the shoreline runs almost straight along the Bay of Bengal. The streets here follow a looser pattern than the well-known planned grid by the sea, with roads branching outward from main routes toward neighbouring areas and open land.
The wider region is flat coastal plain, and water shows mainly as small water bodies and channels crossing the district toward the sea. Puducherry itself is known for its French Quarter, laid out in a rectilinear grid beside the seafront promenade, and for the township of Auroville to the north. Seen from above, the planned seafront and the less regular inland growth make a clear contrast.
