Gyöngyös sits where the Great Hungarian Plain meets the southern slopes of the Mátra, Hungary's highest mountain range. From above, the old town centres on a long main square. Streets run outward from it, becoming a looser pattern of residential blocks. To the north, the town gives way quickly to vineyards and then forested hillsides.
The town is the heart of the Mátra wine region, and vineyards cover the lower slopes around it in fine parallel rows. Churches line the historic centre, including the large Gothic Saint Bartholomew's Church. A Gyöngyös map poster can show the square and its surrounding streets, or extend north to take in the hills.
A narrow-gauge railway climbs from town into the Mátra toward Mátrafüred, and roads lead up to Kékestető, the highest point in Hungary. On a wider map these routes wind up into the contour-shaped forest, contrasting with the flat, orderly land spreading south toward the plain.
