Hagi sits on the Sea of Japan coast in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and most of its centre lies on a delta formed where the Abu River splits into two channels before reaching the sea. From above, the town looks almost like an island: water on both sides, the coast to the north, and a dense pattern of streets filling the land between.
For centuries Hagi was the castle town of the Mori clan. The castle ruins stand at the foot of Mount Shizuki on the western edge of the delta, and the old samurai districts nearby keep a street layout that dates back to the Edo period. Several sites connected to the Meiji Restoration are here, and some form part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing.
