Halmstad stands at the mouth of the river Nissan on Sweden's west coast, facing Laholm Bay and the Kattegat. The river runs north to south through the city before reaching the sea, and bridges stitch the two banks together. Halmstad Castle sits by the water on the east side of the old centre, near where the river widens toward the harbour.
The regular street plan in the old town has a clear origin. After a fire in 1619, Halmstad was rebuilt under the Danish king Christian IV, because the town was Danish until 1645. The rebuilding produced straight streets and rectangular blocks, and the Norre Port gate, one of the few surviving pieces of the old fortifications, still stands at the northern edge of that core.
A Halmstad map poster shows the river winding through the centre, the orderly grid beside it, and residential districts spreading out over flat land. To the west, the coastline runs toward Tylösand, one of the best-known beaches in Sweden, where the land breaks up into small headlands and coves.

The old town was replanned after the 1619 fire. It has a clean rectangular street pattern bounded by the river and the line of the former defences.
Coast to Tylösand
West of the city the shore turns rocky and indented. It leads out to Tylösand's long sandy beach, a favourite summer destination on the Halland coast.
