Hangu is the headquarters of Hangu District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, lying west of Kohat. The town occupies a valley floor with ridges rising on either side, and on a map the terrain explains the layout: building has followed the valley and the main road rather than spreading evenly in every direction, giving the town a long, directional shape.
That road continues west toward Thall and the Kurram valley, making Hangu a waypoint on a long route through hilly country. To the north rises the Samana Range, where British-era posts stood in the late nineteenth century, including Saragarhi, remembered for a battle fought there in 1897.
Closer in, the town has the dense, irregular pattern of a market centre, with lanes branching from the main road into residential areas.
