Harasta lies on the north-eastern edge of Damascus, in the agricultural belt known as the Ghouta. The main highway leaving Damascus towards Homs runs alongside the town, and on a map it is a strong, straight line bordering the built-up area. The older core has narrow, irregular streets, while newer districts have a more regular block pattern.
For centuries the Ghouta was a zone of orchards and gardens watered by channels from the Barada river, supplying the capital with fruit and produce. Around Harasta, fields and tree plots still appear as patches between buildings. The town was heavily damaged during the Syrian war, and its streets hold the memory of the families who lived there.
