Harsīn lies in Kermanshah Province in western Iran, southeast of the city of Kermanshah. On the map it appears as a compact town on a broad valley floor, with the ridges of the Zagros Mountains rising nearby. The streets gather tightly around the centre, then loosen and give way to gardens, fields and the roads that lead across the plain.
The mountains shape everything below them. Watercourses fed by the high ground run across the valley, and orchards and cultivated plots follow them in green lines. Main roads leave town in a few clear directions, linking Harsīn with neighbouring towns in the province and threading their way between the slopes.
The Kermanshah region has been settled for thousands of years and is known for archaeological sites from many periods, which gives even its smaller towns a deep backdrop.
