Hlegu lies north of Yangon, on the wide, flat lowland of lower Myanmar. On the map, the town is centred on the main road that runs through it: a straight axis with streets and lanes branching off on both sides. Beyond the built-up area, the land opens into rice fields and farm plots, divided by small tracks and water channels.
It is the administrative centre of a township in the Yangon Region and a stopping point for traffic heading north out of the city. The surrounding landscape is typical of the Irrawaddy delta margin: low-lying and fertile, with a pattern of fields shaped by the monsoon.
