Hlohlolwane is the township of Clocolan, a small town in the eastern Free State of South Africa, close to the Lesotho border. This is farming country, with wide fields of grain beneath sandstone hills and, further east, the line of the Maloti mountains. Like many townships in the province, Hlohlolwane sits apart from the older town centre, and the map still shows that separation.
From above, the township is densely built compared with its surroundings. Its streets form tight, regular blocks of small plots, with a few longer roads giving structure and leading toward Clocolan. Newer extensions add more rows at the edges. Beyond them the land opens abruptly into cultivated fields and rocky ridges.
