Honjō Map Poster
Honjō lies at the northern edge of Saitama Prefecture, on the flat expanse of the Kantō Plain where the Tone River forms the boundary with Gunma. In the Edo period it was Honjō-shuku, one of the larger post stations on the Nakasendō highway, and the former route still threads through the older part of the city.
The map shows a central district of narrow streets and small lots around the old highway and the railway station, surrounded by a looser pattern of residential blocks, fields and factories. Paddies and vegetable plots create rectangular textures on the outskirts, while irrigation channels and small rivers run across the plain toward the Tone.
A stop on the Jōetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen, Honjō-Waseda Station, opened south of the centre in the 2000s, and a newer district has grown around it along with a Waseda University campus. The high-speed line crosses the plain in a long, perfectly straight stroke, with Honjō-Waseda Station and its newer streets set apart south of the old town.
