Honolulu occupies the southern shore of Oʻahu, a narrow coastal plain backed by the steep Koʻolau Range. The mountains send long ridges down toward the sea, and between them lie deep valleys such as Mānoa and Nuʻuanu, so the city's upper edge looks like a series of fingers reaching inland. Below, the grid meets a coast of reefs, harbours and beaches.
Diamond Head, the volcanic tuff cone at the eastern end of Waikīkī, is one of the most recognisable shapes on any map of the islands, a near-perfect ring beside the sea. Waikīkī itself is framed by the Ala Wai Canal, dug in the 1920s to drain the wetlands that once covered the area, and by Kapiʻolani Park at its eastern edge.
Downtown, ʻIolani Palace, once the residence of the Hawaiian monarchy, stands a short walk from the harbour. To the west, the branching lochs of Pearl Harbor form one of the most distinctive coastlines in the Pacific.
