Hostomel is a town in Kyiv Oblast, a short distance north-west of the Ukrainian capital. On a map it lies among the pine forests that surround Kyiv, close to the valley of the Irpin river and neighbouring the towns of Bucha and Irpin, with residential streets spreading between wooded areas.
The most prominent feature on the map is Antonov Airport, a cargo and test airfield whose long runway sits on the northern side of the town. In February 2022 the airport was the scene of heavy fighting in the first days of the full-scale Russian invasion, and the An-225 Mriya, the world's largest aircraft, was destroyed there.
