Huntington Beach faces the Pacific along an almost straight stretch of the Orange County coast, and on a map that shoreline dominates everything. Pacific Coast Highway runs parallel to the sand. Behind it, a regular grid of streets and residential blocks extends inland, broken by parks, wetlands and the curving lines of newer subdivisions.
The city calls itself Surf City USA. Its pier reaches well out into the ocean from the end of Main Street and marks the centre of downtown. To the northwest, the Bolsa Chica wetlands open up as a wide area of water channels and marsh. Beyond them, the canals and islands of Huntington Harbour form an intricate pattern of residential waterways.
Oil drove the city's growth in the early twentieth century, and a few pumps still stand among the houses. Inland, Huntington Central Park, one of the largest city parks in Orange County, adds a large green area.
