Huşi lies in the east of Romania's Vaslui County, not far from the Prut River and the border with the Republic of Moldova. From above the town fits neatly into a valley, with streets converging on a central core and thinning as the ground rises. The terrain gives the map its shape. Roads follow contours instead of a grid and bend out toward the surrounding hills.
The town has been an episcopal seat for centuries. Its Orthodox cathedral, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, dates to the reign of Stephen the Great at the end of the fifteenth century. On the map the older centre shows as a denser tangle of short streets. Newer residential blocks sit around it in a looser arrangement, and roads head out toward neighbouring villages.
Huşi is also known for wine. The slopes around the town have long been planted with vineyards, and the local white variety, Zghihară de Huşi, carries the town's name.
