From above, the town is a regular grid of blocks set on gently sloping land above the river, with farmland, largely given over to sugarcane and other crops, stretching away on every side.
The river is the dominant feature of the landscape. The Igarapava hydroelectric plant sits on the Rio Grande near the town, part of a chain of dams along the river that turned stretches of it into wide reservoirs. The water's edge and the dam structure give the map a strong line that contrasts with the orderly town streets.
