Imari lies in the northwest of Saga Prefecture on Kyushu, where a river flows into a long, sheltered inlet of the sea. From above, the town gathers along the river and the harbour edge in a dense pattern of short streets. Low wooded hills press in on both sides, and quays, reclaimed land and bridges shape the waterfront.
The name Imari is known worldwide because of porcelain. From the seventeenth century, wares made in the nearby kilns of Arita and the surrounding hills were shipped out through this port. That is why European collectors came to call them Imari ware. The harbour district is the part of town most closely tied to that trade.
An Imarichō-kō map poster brings out how closely town and water are bound together here. The river divides the streets, the bay fills a large part of the frame, and the hills appear as blank, quiet ground around the settled valley floor. The result is a calm, balanced composition in which the harbour sits at the centre of everything.

The waterfront district was historically the shipping point for porcelain from the surrounding kilns. Its quays and compact blocks mark where that trade began.
