Imbituba sits on the southern coast of Santa Catarina, where the land breaks into a series of bays, points and sandy beaches facing the Atlantic. The town centre gathers around its port on a sheltered stretch of shore, and from there the settlement spreads along the coast in several separate clusters rather than a single dense core.
Inland, the map is marked by large coastal lagoons that sit just behind the dunes, their outlines irregular and soft against the straight lines of the roads. Further along the coast lies Praia do Rosa, one of the best-known beaches in southern Brazil. The waters off this coast are part of a protected area for southern right whales, which come close to shore in winter.
An Imbituba map poster captures that meeting of harbour, sand and lagoon.
