Imus lies in the province of Cavite, directly south of Metro Manila. From above, it is long and narrow. Aguinaldo Highway runs its full length from north to south as its main spine, and the Imus River and smaller streams flow roughly parallel toward Manila Bay. Between them, the land is filled with a patchwork of residential subdivisions.
Each subdivision has its own layout: some are regular grids, others loops or curving crescents. Placed side by side, they create a very varied texture, cut through by rivers and the highway. The historic centre, around the cathedral and the town plaza, is more compact and older than the rest. Rice fields once surrounded it, and a few patches of open ground still remain.
An Imus map poster marks the city known as the Flag Capital of the Philippines. On 28 May 1898, the Philippine flag was first raised in battle at Alapan, in Imus. The city was also the site of fighting in the revolution of 1896. Today, on the map, the highway and the rivers structure the growing suburban city.
