Ipixuna is in the far west of Amazonas state, not far from the border with Acre, in a region where rivers do the work of roads. The town stands on the bank of the Juruá, one of the Amazon's great winding tributaries. On a map, the river is the whole story: looping bends, sandbanks, and old channels cut off from the main flow and left as crescent-shaped lakes.
The town itself is small and simple in plan: a few parallel streets along the high bank, cross streets heading inland, and then forest. A waterfront area where boats tie up links the town to the river, which carries people and goods up and down the Juruá. There are no highways linking it to the wider road network, so the river and air travel connect it to the outside world.

Crescent-shaped lakes around the river are old channels left behind as the river changed course. They add curved shapes across the forest on both sides.
