Ipoh fills part of the Kinta Valley in the Malaysian state of Perak. The Kinta River runs through the middle of the city, dividing the old town on its west bank from the newer town to the east. From above the street pattern is tidy and fairly regular, while steep limestone hills stand around the edges as bold, empty shapes.
Ipoh grew rapidly in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries on the wealth of tin mining in the valley. Shophouses, a large railway station and other buildings from that period survive in the old town. The limestone hills hold cave temples, and the city is also known for its food, including white coffee and bean sprout chicken.
An Ipoh map poster shows the neat blocks of the old and new towns on either side of the river, joined by a few bridges. Around them, suburbs and main roads spread through the valley. Former mining land, lakes and the limestone massifs leave open, irregular areas that give the print its character.
