Irun lies at the western end of the Pyrenees, on the Spanish side of the Bidasoa river, which forms the border with France. Across the water is Hendaye. From above, the town spreads over low ground and gentle hills along the river. Its streets run in several directions, shaped by the terrain and by the railway and road routes that have crossed the border here for centuries.
In the river between Irun and Hendaye is Pheasant Island, a tiny island jointly administered by Spain and France. Control alternates between them every six months. To the north, the Bidasoa widens into an estuary and bay beside Hondarribia. To the west, the steep ridge of Jaizkibel rises straight up from the coast.
