Islay is the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides, lying west of Kintyre and separated from Jura by the narrow Sound of Islay. From above its shape is unmistakable: the long sea loch of Loch Indaal cuts deep from the south, nearly dividing the island and leaving the Rhinns peninsula to the west. Roads follow the coast, and a few cross the peat moorland inland.
Bowmore sits on the eastern shore of Loch Indaal, with a straight main street climbing to a round church at the top, said to have been built without corners. Port Ellen in the south and Port Askaig on the Sound of Islay are the ferry harbours. Along the southern coast, a line of distilleries sits right at the water's edge.
Islay is known worldwide for its peated whisky, and its history runs deeper still: at Finlaggan, on a small island in a loch, the Lords of the Isles held their council. In winter, large flocks of geese arrive from Greenland. An Islay map poster shows the loch, the harbours and the long coastline that ties it all together.
