Itzehoe is one of the oldest towns in Holstein. It grew up beside the Stör, a tidal river that winds across the marshland toward the Elbe. The river still dominates the map, curving through the town in broad bends. It is lined by quays, green banks and flat low ground that has always had to be managed against water.
The old town centre originally stood inside a loop of the Stör, and the rounded outline of that area can still be traced in the street pattern even though the waterway itself has changed. From this core, streets climb toward higher ground to the north and east. There, residential districts, parks and woodland spread over the gentle slopes of the Geest.
