Ivano-Frankivsk sits in the Carpathian foothills between the Bystrytsia Solotvynska and Bystrytsia Nadvirnianska rivers, which join north of the city. On the map, the old centre stands out as a tight, almost regular grid around a central square. Wider avenues, rail lines and later residential districts surround it and spread toward the river valleys.
The city was founded in 1662 as the fortress of Stanisławów by the Polish magnate Andrzej Potocki, and its planned layout still echoes those origins. The town hall stands in the middle of the market square, so the square becomes a ring of streets around a single building. The city took its current name in 1962 in honour of the writer Ivan Franko.
