Iwase sits in the northern part of what is now the city of Sakuragawa, in western Ibaraki, where the flat Kanto farmland begins to rise into low forested hills. From above, the town reads as a compact cluster of streets around the railway, with irrigated fields spreading outward in neat rectangles and small hamlets strung along the roads between them.
The JR Mito Line passes through Iwase Station, and for decades the town was also the northern end of the Tsukuba Railway, a local line that closed in 1987. Its former route has since been turned into a long cycling path, and on a map it still shows as a gentle, unbroken line running south through the fields toward the mountains.
An Iwase map poster works well at larger scales, where the tighter streets near the station can be read against the looser texture of the paddies and the soft, contour-like edges of the woodland. In black and white, the difference between built-up blocks and open farmland becomes the real subject of the composition.

The trackbed of the former Tsukuba Railway leaves town as one long uninterrupted line, now used by cyclists, heading south through farmland toward Tsuchiura.

Wooded ridges of the Tsukuba range rise on the southern and eastern side of the map, their edges giving the flat plain a clear, natural boundary.
