I‘zāz, often written Azaz, lies in the north of Aleppo governorate, a short distance from the border with Turkey. The surrounding country is fertile, gently undulating farmland, and the town sits in the middle of it as a dense cluster of streets. Main roads run south toward Aleppo and north toward the border crossing, giving the map a clear north–south axis.
At the heart of the town is an ancient tell, a mound built up over millennia of occupation, which a detailed map shows as a rounded knot where streets curve around rising ground. The place appears in medieval chronicles too: in 1125 the Battle of Azaz was fought nearby between Crusader forces and a Seljuk army.

A main road heads north toward the Turkish frontier, while another runs south to Aleppo, forming the strongest line through the town's street network.

Olive groves and fields surround the town, so the map fades from dense lanes into wide open ground marked only by tracks and field edges.
