The river runs along its edge, the sea lies to the north, and the wetlands around Lake Manzala spread to the east.
The town is known for fishing and boatbuilding, and its waterfront is lined with quays, slipways and moored vessels. Streets sit tightly behind the riverbank, packed into the land between the water and the surrounding lagoons. Across the river, the resort of Ras El Bar faces it on the western bank.
