Jaén sits on the slopes of a mountain in northern Andalusia, and from above the city seems to climb uphill toward the castle of Santa Catalina on the ridge above. The old town fills the lower slopes with narrow, winding streets, while newer districts spread out on the flatter ground below in straighter blocks. Above it all, the steep hillside remains largely empty on the map.
The cathedral, designed largely by the Renaissance architect Andrés de Vandelvira, stands at the heart of the old town, a large rectangular footprint surrounded by tight lanes. Jaén also has well-preserved Arab baths beneath a later palace, among the largest of their kind in Spain.
The province of Jaén is one of the world's largest producers of olive oil, and the land around the city is covered with olive groves in regular rows.
