Jagdalpur is the headquarters of Bastar district in southern Chhattisgarh, set on a forested plateau far from the state's larger cities. On a map, the town is a fairly compact knot of streets. Roads run out toward the surrounding villages and woodland, and the Indravati River passes close by on its way west. The town fades quickly into farmland and forest.
Near the centre, the grounds of the old Bastar Palace and the open water of Dalpat Sagar lake show up as distinct shapes among the smaller blocks. Around them the street pattern is irregular and has grown over time. Its lanes bend to meet one another and don't follow a grid. It is a modest layout that reads cleanly once the colour is gone.

The river runs near the town before heading west toward Chitrakote Falls. Its winding course gives the southern Bastar landscape a natural line that contrasts with the town's street pattern.

The old Bastar Palace sits at the heart of the town. Its grounds are an open space that the older streets were laid out around, and they anchor the rest of the map.
