Jinan is known as the City of Springs, and its old centre is built around water that rises from underground. Baotu Spring, Black Tiger Spring and dozens of others feed Daming Lake and the moat that encircles the former walled city. On a map this shows as a ring of water and parkland, with Daming Lake filling the northern part of the old town.
The city lies between two landforms. To the south, Thousand Buddha Mountain and a range of low hills rise abruptly at the edge of the streets, their slopes covered in trees and temple paths. To the north, the Yellow River runs across the plain, held within long embankments and crossed by a handful of large bridges.
Jinan is the capital of Shandong and a long-established regional centre, home to Shandong University and a major railway junction. A large lake within the northern part of the old city, fed by springs and edged by pavilions and gardens. It forms the biggest open shape in the centre of the map.
Yellow River
The river crosses the plain north of the city between broad levees. On the poster it appears as a wide, measured band, set apart from the dense streets by open floodplain.
