Jinotega lies in the northern highlands of Nicaragua, in a narrow valley enclosed by green hills. Its nickname, the City of Mists, comes from the low cloud that often settles over those slopes. On a map the town has a long shape. Its block pattern is regular on the flat ground, then thins and breaks up where the terrain begins to climb.
The surrounding department is one of the country's main coffee-growing regions, and most of the map beyond the edge of town is rural: winding roads, scattered farms and ridgelines. North of the town, the large Apanás reservoir spreads across the landscape. Its irregular shoreline adds a broad, pale shape to any wider view of the area.
A Jinotega map poster captures how a compact grid fits into the highland terrain around it. On a hill above the town, a cross is a familiar local landmark. The roads running south toward Matagalpa and out into the northern valleys show how the town connects to the rest of coffee country.
