Jīroft lies in the south of Kerman province in Iran, in a broad, warm valley watered by the Halil River. The surrounding land is highly productive, known for dates and citrus, and on the map the town's streets are set among orchards, fields and the braided course of the river.
The area gained international attention in the early 2000s when finds from ancient sites near the town revealed a Bronze Age civilisation now often called the Jiroft culture. Its carved stone vessels and other artefacts have added a new chapter to the early history of the Iranian plateau.
