Joal is part of the commune of Joal-Fadiouth, on the Petite Côte south of Dakar, where the Atlantic shore meets a maze of lagoons and mangrove channels. The mainland town runs along the coast, with a busy fishing beach where wooden pirogues are hauled up on the sand. Behind the shoreline its streets form a loose grid that reaches inland toward the main road.
Across the lagoon lies Fadiouth, an island built largely on accumulated seashells and linked to Joal by a long wooden bridge. A second shell island holds a cemetery shared by the Christian and Muslim communities, which is often cited as a symbol of local coexistence. Joal is also the birthplace of Léopold Sédar Senghor, Senegal’s first president and a celebrated poet.
