Joaquín V. González is the main town of the Anta department, in the east of Salta province, where the Andean foothills give way to the lowland plains of the Chaco. The town follows the classic Argentine plan. Square blocks form a chessboard around a central plaza, long avenues mark the main directions, and the grid ends sharply at the surrounding fields.
The name honours Joaquín Víctor González, a writer, politician and educator from La Rioja who founded the National University of La Plata. The town grew with the railway and with the spread of agriculture across the region. Today the land around it is dominated by large cultivated plots of grain and legume crops.
From above, that farming is easy to see. Huge rectangular fields are separated by strips of remaining woodland and straight rural roads. A Joaquín V. Field and woodland bands
Around the town, large cleared fields alternate with strips of remaining woodland. The long parallel bands reach far beyond the edges of the grid.
