Kabale lies in the highlands of southwestern Uganda, close to the borders with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The town sits in a valley surrounded by steep hills, and on a map its streets form a compact centre with roads that twist outward, following the slopes and ridgelines.
The surrounding hills are heavily terraced for farming, a landscape that has earned the region the nickname Switzerland of Africa. A short distance away lies Lake Bunyonyi, a deep, many-armed lake scattered with small islands, often visited by travellers heading toward the region's national parks.
