From above, the town has a compact, irregular core of lanes and bazaars, the kind that develops over centuries, surrounded by more regular residential colonies added in recent decades. Local tradition links Kaithal with the older name Kapisthal and with the landscape of the Mahabharata, and the town lies within the wider Kurukshetra region associated with the epic.
