Kalundborg sits at the inner end of Kalundborg Fjord on the west coast of Zealand. The fjord is the defining shape on the map: a long arm of water reaching inland, with the town set around its head. Harbour basins, quays and piers cut into the shoreline and give the water's edge a hard, angular outline.
Above the harbour, the medieval quarter sits on higher ground. Its landmark is the Church of Our Lady, a twelfth-century church with five towers and one of the best-known buildings in Denmark. The narrow, irregular lanes of the old town look very different from the straighter streets that grew up around them later.
Kalundborg is also known for its industrial symbiosis, where factories along the fjord share energy, water and by-products. A Kalundborg map poster shows all of this at once: the old hilltop, the working waterfront and the long reach of the fjord.

The old quarter around the five-towered Church of Our Lady keeps its irregular, compact street plan. It forms a small knot of lanes above the harbour.
Harbour and industry
Quays, ferry berths and large industrial sites line the shore. Their straight edges contrast sharply with the curving natural coast farther out.
